Tibetan Buddhism & Consciousness

September 6th, 2006

Buddhism is one of the great world religions. Buddhism is non-theistic. It is not about God. It is about the Tibetan word which points at the “ground of all being.” We translate that Tibetan word into English as “mind,” but the Tibetan word does not mean what that Enlish word mind means - not even close.

Our English word “mind” frequently means something as small as an epi-phenomenon of brain - not even close. Not even in the ball park.

We often use the word consciousness in place of the Tibetan word for what Buddhism is about. “Consciousness” comes closer, but the real issue is fundamental to the summit Buddhists wish to attain - words don’t go there.

The “ground of all being” can be looked at directly - but words, with their extraordinary limitedness, can not be used to label it; especially in the West where we have no experiential cultural habits. We value the intellectual. We value the material. We imagine ourselves to be separate. We believe our shadow belongs to what it’s projected on… everything is out there… This whole package is a long, long, non linear ways from looking directly at the ground of all being.

But still, we can use the word consciousness to talk about what Tibetan Buddhism… all Buddhism… is about.

Book Review of The Field by Stu Webb

August 2nd, 2006

The Field
The Quest for the Secret Force of the Universe
By Lynne McTaggart

Ms McTaggart has molded a creative synthesis of explorations by scientists that point to the existence of an ocean of microscopic vibrations called the Zero Point Field (”ZPF”) which exists in the space between things. The scientific findings include:

  • that the ZPF is a repository of all fields and all ground energy states;
  • that the ZPF creates a medium enabling molecules and particles to speak to each other — and not just locally but also nonlocally;
  • that our brains can limit the infinite wave of information available from the ZPF — that our brain is not a storage mechanism but a receiving mechanism from the ZPF;
  • that our reality emerges from the primordial ZPF soup with the involvement of living consciousness;
  • that there may be only one intangible world, namely the ZPF, and the ability of matter to organize itself coherently. (This is a conclusion very congruent with Buddhist Absolute and Relative Reality.)
  • that we can learn ways to affect the outcomes that emerge from the Field;
  • that it appears that remote viewing results from a local viewer picking up quantum fluctuations in the Field;
  • that we can actually tap into the Field to control our own health and heal others;
  • that group consciousness, working through the Field may act as a universal organizer in the cosmos;
  • that all communication in the universe exists as a pulsating frequency and the Field provides the basis for everything to communicate with everything else.
  • These are just a few of the conclusions and hypotheses embedded in Ms McTaggart’s skillful narrative that describes results of the search by a number of scientists for the existence and implications of the Field.

    This is a stimulating read — one that opens the mind to new ways of looking at our universe. Ways that fit very well with Buddhist teachings.

  • KTC Online Library

    June 29th, 2006

    We get quite a few requests - especially from students during the school year - for recommendations for books on meditation and Buddhism to study. We also want our sangha to be able to look through their library from wherever they are. So we are very happy that after much discussion, research, planning, testing, scanning of barcodes, editing of entries, etc, our KTC sangha library is now online. To look at it, go to the KTC home page and click on “KTC Library Online— Beta Testing.” Be sure to read the note about internet connections and the age of your computer. The library may take a minute to download but will stay cached on your computer, and therefore be fast to use, after that. We will let you know each time we update it so you can download the new version.

    As you look at the library you’ll see there are 2 columns. When you click on a book in the left column you will see details about that book in the right column. Depending upon the way your computer is set up, the left column may have a scroll bar along the bottom of its window as well as on the side. If your machine is set up that way you will miss a lot of books if you do not notice and use the scroll bar on the bottom.

    Some books have nice covers and some have plain brown covers. That has to do with the lookup function in the library software, not the content of the book! (PS This is a dharma joke)

    See the “Library Additions” page nested under this one for a list of items that will be added to the library soon.

    Enjoy your visit to our virtual library!!

    Garage Sale 2006 July 27-29

    June 8th, 2006

    Garage Sale 2006 July 27th - 29th

    Donations Needed | Great New Location

    We have a great new location for our 4th annual garage sale - Suzanne Rooney & Russ Vogt’s Prayer Barn! This means we can set up ahead of time in a location with good energy and plenty of space, and we don’t have to worry about bad weather. What a great deal. Mark your calendars to visit the garage sale, and check out Russ & Suzanne’s excellent art at the same time. The address is 17210 Co Rd 47, Plymouth, 55446. Take 169 North to Bass Lake Road West. From Bass Lake Road West take a left at the 3rd stop light, Northwest Blvd. From NW Blvd take a right at the first stop light, County Road 47. Stay on Cty Road 47. You’ll go under 494 and through a 4-way stop at Vicksburg Lane. Russ & Suzanne’s is about 3/4 miles on the right. You can see their barn & ceramic art from the road.

    Donations, donations and more donations are needed for our 2006 garage sale. Drop them off at the Center anyday of the week or contact us (see below) for someone to pick up your donation. If you bring your donation and no one is around, leave things in front of the garage door or on the front porch.

    Your donations are our treasures!! We really appreciate them. Consider donating to our “White Elephant” table or donate a gift certificate to your favorite place - perhaps restaurants, coops, bookstores are popular examples of gift certificates.

    Contact us to arrange for a pick up or a special time to drop off.

    We had a very successful July, 2005 garage sale. In addition to lots and lots of good things to sell, several items were donated that were on our wish list. We would like more nice chairs, tables, lamps - furniture for 2006. We sold out of everything we had this year quite rapidly and could definitely have used more. And, of course, the quality older furniture pieces do the best. CDs also went very well, and good books, DVDs, movies, nice clothing, t-shirts of all sizes, kids toys and clothing in very good condition, and things for 7-12 year old boys, jewelry, knick knacks, kitchen items, dishes, candles, gardening things and gardening tools, other tools… We’re hoping for a repeat performance in 2006!

    Please…. Only clean, useable items that do not need repair and no office furniture or exercise equipment.

    Donations are tax deductible and go directly to benefit the Center.
